Listen to our episode with Karen HERE

Karen Oliver is a former Social Worker with a background in mental health, domestic abuse, sexual exploitation, and addiction. She is currently training to become a psychotherapist, specializing in eating disorders and body image. Karen launched Beyond The Bathroom Scale® in 2012 and developed her multi-award-winning coaching app programme Beyond the Scale in 2018 - which is available on the App Store for iOS and Android.

In this episode, Karen discusses her journey to help others make peace with food and their bodies, how to become in tune with our bodies and follow the cues they give us through intuitive eating, the media's influence of diet culture and disordered eating, and the importance of giving ourselves self-compassion. Bridgett and Karen also discuss tools that people can use to cope with distressing beliefs and emotions surrounding disordered eating and food restriction, the impact of societal beauty standards and what we can do to shift the narrative, how to become aware of our thoughts and where they really stem from, and being mindful of how we speak about food and weight to our children and peers.

"Acceptance doesn't necessarily mean the same thing as forgiveness. Some things are just inexcusable and unforgivable –but accepting what we've been through, accepting that we've come out the other side of it, and accepting that it's our responsibility to help ourselves heal, help ourselves recover. And even if we can't do it ourselves, accepting that it's okay to ask for help, to get help and that you're deserving of help."

"No one stands up at a funeral and goes, “She was a great person because she was size 6.” No one cares about that. They'll be saying things about how you showed up as a person in their lives, what you did for them, how compassionate you were, how you loved, your passions, and how you made people feel. No one stands up and talks about what size pants you wear.

No one cares about that stuff."
