August 2024
At Beyond Beauty Project, we celebrate individuals who challenge beauty ideals and perfectionism, and this month, I'm thrilled to introduce Jill as our Beauty of the Month. In her early twenties, Jill is courageously forging her own path, defying societal rules and success ideals, and embracing her unique qualities—a challenging feat at her age. Working closely with her, I've seen her dedication to self-discovery and empowerment. Jill's journey inspires others to reject unrealistic beauty norms and embrace their true selves. Join us in celebrating her transformation as she paves the way for a more inclusive and authentic definition of beauty.
How did you break out of the box of perfectionism?
I broke out of the box of being OK with not always being OK. Being diagnosed with OCD 19 years into my life was a pivotal point for me. Still, it brought me to where I am now – free from the habit of perfectionism (OCD) and having the courage to share vulnerable parts of my journey to help others with theirs. I learned there’s a gift in sharing to help others not feel so alone and, most importantly, understand that it is OK not to be OK because no person is “perfect.” – I call this the continuous waves of the journey; for there to be ups, there must be downs.
What advice would you give your younger self about the pressure to be perfect?
I would say to myself, “The ‘need’ to be perfect will only tire and drain you out. It won’t hurt others, but it will hurt you. There is no ‘perfect’; there never was, nor will there ever be. You were made just as you are for a reason. The only person that needs to accept you as you are is yourself because, in this life, the one constant person is you.”
How has your perception of beauty and/or success changed over the years?
I have grown to realize and understand that beauty and success are not what appears on the outside and what others see (your hair, clothing style, job, how much money you make); it's how you treat yourself, do for yourself, and what fills your happiness cup up.
What helps you live authentically?
Living in alignment with my intuition, physical being, and mental state helps me be and feel my most comfortable and confident self.
How do you practice self-love?
I practice self-love through journal reflections, reading self-help books (Morgan Richard Oliver is my favorite!), and doing activities solo!
What are ways you honor your body?
I honor my body through practicing yoga, grounding while meditating, and going on long walks, which all help me connect and listen to my physical body while supporting my mental and spiritual health.
